We design spaces to help our audiences connect and share ideas. If we want to create a better future for finance and tech, we believe meeting in-person will get us there.

The Problem

Working in tech, surrounded by AI tools in our day-to-day lives, there's a tendency to think that the future of Design will be driven by the digital. And that's not entirely wrong. But it's not the whole picture.

Money is, and always has been, physical as well as digital. It's meant to be exchanged, connected, moved, stored. It's a tool. The machines that hold it, that move it, that monitor it, and transform it are tools too—part of a larger system that straddles the world of the material and the ethereal.

It's weird for me as a designer in tech to be saying this, but here it is: I don't know if I love being online right now. It’s exhausting on there! According to the internet, we're always behind, or always too slow. AI this, AI that. As much as we love to build and digest software, I think we all crave, more than ever, the feeling of connection and conversation, and being in person.

One of the few things we can trust is that meeting face-to-face is very different from meeting online. And that trust happens much faster when we look each other in the eyes and say, hello. In fact, the way money works is largely driven by how people move through the world. Every transaction, every payment, every invisible ticker in our economy is usually accompanied by a conversation

Strangely, in a world driven by the digital, meeting in person dramatically increased our brand's reach, turning memorable interactions into new media.

The Solution

So we did an experiment. We decided to build a series of pop-up experiences that brought together people from across the industry. The goal was simple: cut through the digital noise and meet face-to-face, overcoming the challenges of finance... one transaction and one conversation at a time. We started in New York, taking over a coffee shop called Fellini...

We only had a few days to put the pop-up together, but with the help of AI, the idea materialized at rapid speed, turning hallucinations into hard signage. It wasn't fancy, but it gave our copywriters permission to elevate our brand voice in a unique way.

People crowded into tables, waited in line for swag, chatted on the street. It was designed to connect with our customers, to get off our devices and chat about the problems we're facing as we all try to build a better financial system. We even brought Benjamin Franklin to life, who put his woodblock printing skills to use with a modern heat press machine.

The pop-up was a succes. So we expanded the series. We opened a coffee shop in SF. We partnered with a Mister Softee truck in the West Village. The strategy worked. Taking Plaid's brand into the real world, not in a large way but a meaningful way,, helped us connect to each other beyond our devices. It gave us permission to have deeper, more meaningful conversations with our customers, the people building the future of finance.

How we show up, big or small, does make a difference. We design physical spaces to remember and connect. To see each other, face to face, and remember who we are. Even if it's just to make someone smile, I think connection will be the most valuable currency in this crazy new world.
